Monday September 23rd: Sun in Libra

Today, the Sun leaves compartmentalized Earthy Virgo for intellectual Air Libra. There’s an energy adjustment from what we can do (Virgo) to what we can brainstorm (Libra). While the Sun transits Virgo, emphasis is placed on efficiency, realism and service to others; but while journeying through Libra, the Sun shifts gears and highlights intimate relationships, intellectualism and all things abstract. Virgo forces the Sun to pay attention to all the little (and seemingly unimportant) details to life; so when the Sun returns here every year, we may find ourselves compelled to do the same. Libra encourages the Sun to compromise: details aren’t etched in stone here. Generally speaking, astrologers tie the Sun with our ego, individuality and talents: thus, the Sun sign reveals how we express our individuality, where we are most likely to be egotistical and the talents we seem to excel best with. Represented by the Scales, the ego of the Solarian Libra native is attached to their personal relationships (particularly those of a marital or business capacity), fairness/justice/law, and maintaining balance between two opposing forces. Mentally driven Libra effortlessly intellectualizes any conversation and finds great pleasure in discussions with others in social gatherings. Subsequently, with the Sun passing through this constellation, we may find some of this energy “rubbing off” on the rest of us to some extent—yes, even if you AREN’T a Sun in Libra !

Diplomacy and negotiation may be the best prized Libran traits, in my opinion. These guys strongly support active participation and compromise over stalemates and passivity any day. As an Air sign, objectivity, abstract ideas and comparative thinking all appeal to Libra. One thing I’ve noticed about Libra is that this sign has the ability to mimic certain Water qualities, at least at a superficial level. The Scales seek balance, so naturally, when the Sun is in Libra, we look for answers from all possible angles instead of just one viewpoint (*insert Sun in Virgo joke here*). Libra’s need to keep the peace and appease both sides of an argument imitates the Water family’s gift of emotional sensitivities. Obviously all humans have feelings (some are just more tucked away than others), and Libra has perfected the art of pretending to care. I’d best describe Air signs, as “understanding” emotional concerns, never seeming to “relate” to them—which are two totally different things. At best, when the Sun is in Libra, we prefer to remain neutral amidst sticky situations; at worst, when the Sun is in Libra, we end up playing one side against the other: manipulating both until we can be sure we get what we want out of the deal. Libra natives are rarely openly confrontational and when trouble is stirred up, it’s done subtly. Welcome to the world of Libra, folks!

Studiers of astrology also link Libra with luxury, beauty, the arts, music and theatre. Since Venus serves as the dual home planet for both Taurus and Libra, these matters fit PERFECTLY here. Venus (and by default, Libra) finds immense gratification when indulging in good wine, good food, good laughs, good music and all around good times. These motifs, infused with their innate attraction to romance and harmony, make Libra season the perfect time for trying to understand our partners, networking, and building solid connections with others. Although Libra can be just as chatty as her Gemini sister and as brainy as her Aquarian brother, this sign looks closely at those one-to-one conversations or something similar to a fireside chat: small, and informal yet stimulating. How does this relate to those of us who were not born under a Sun in Libra transit? Well, as we express our own egos (based on our Sun signs), we’ll attempt to integrate some of these Libra- based themes. For example, as a Sun in Virgo, my life revolves around my incessant need to organize, plan, compartmentalize and drown myself in activities with realistic end-results. Perhaps, over the next few weeks during this Sun in Libra transit, I may go about these tasks strategically instead of abrasively (as Virgo can be—-most times). One more example can be found with those of you who are Sun in Capricorn natives. The ego of Capricorn is wrapped around material acquisition, financial stability, social status and public image. Over the next four weeks, Solar Capricorns may soften around the edges as they look for the best way to meet with “the right people” and further their career/professional status. The normally detached and aloof nature of Capricorn may melt (thanks to the Sun currently moving through Libra) and they become a bit more suave to get the things they want. See how that works?  The Sun in Libra transit emboldens us to be gentle, yet persuasive. Essentially, Libra is the eternal home of , “the soft sell.”

When the Sun is in Libra, it best impacts those who were born during this transit (obviously); followed those with a Sun or Ascendant sign placed in the Air family [Gemini, Libra, Aquarius] or the Fire family [Aries, Leo, Sagittarius]. —primarily because Air and Fire are complementary elements in astrology (and in science, now that I’ve mentioned it).

**And on a related tangent, I selected these two images because they are perfect representations of what Libra stands for: beauty, artsy and creativity**
