“Champion of the underdog, Libra encourages us to apply our energy to all things just, intellectual and beautiful.”
On Saturday December 7th, Mars leaves industrious Virgo for diplomatic Libra. Mars signs uncover our ambitions, motivations and energy. How do we expend energy? What motivates us? How do we integrate our ambitions with our drive? In addition to dynamism, Mars progressions through constellations different from our natal sign can help us as we take concrete steps to actualize our goals. This planet is all about action: revealing how we prefer to get up, get going and stay going. In Virgo, Mars functions at top efficiency! As an Earth-Mutable sign, Mars in Virgo prompts us to practically evolve any longstanding goals so that they can be satisfactorily concluded. Virgo is closely associated with medicine, health &wellness, diets, exercise, self-improvement, work ethics and service to others. Appropriately so, those themes consumed a great deal of our energy this month. Perhaps we reevaluated and evolved our diets and exercise routines; transformed goals connected to improving our work ethic; adapted our attitudes surrounding community service and giving back; or even something as simple as organizing things around our homes/offices. As discriminating as Virgo is, astrologers place heavy emphasis on categorizing, analyzing and breaking things down when Mars rests here. Discerning Virgo takes great pains to calculate all risks involved before binding themselves to action. Virgos function best in “high crisis” mode —-even when there is no genuine crisis in sight. [When we couple in the fact that communicative planet Mercury has been traveling through Scorpio—which is Virgo on steroids—the last five weeks have been TENSE in terms of linking with others and creating consistently harmonious exchanges.] Thus, we may have temporarily adopted this attitude during the month of November [as a native Mars in Virgo, I operate this way year round *insert deep sigh here*].
When in this Earth sign, Mars reviews the feasibility of a task: is this worth my effort? In what ways can this maximize returns? Essentially, Virgo highlights a genuine need for “wiggle room” and flexibility: if a project no longer looks promising, it’s quite painless for this sign to wrap things up and move onto something else. (We can contrast this with the previous Mars in Leo transit which has no problem committing to lost causes in an effort to just “hold on.”)
Now that Mars is moving into Cardinal Libra, we will spend the remainder of 2013 creating new goals, initiating new projects, exploring untapped resources and finding tasks in which we can behave in supervisory roles. When placed in the Cardinal family, Mars commits his energy to blazing trails and starting something new. Air Libra encourages Mars to direct energy into intellectual pursuits or projects that toy with abstract ideas and reaching out to others. Most followers of astrology are aware that the Air element functions primarily on mental energy—-so it’s only natural that Mars works in a similar fashion when here. Astrologers also tie Libra with relationships/partnerships, equality/fairness, balance/diplomacy; as well as art/beauty/music/culture/sophistication/luxury. For the rest of the year, our Mars in Libra influences us to push our energy into quests where we can create/build romantic relationships/business partnerships or explore different cultures/art forms. This is also a good time to direct energy into revising or (re)negotiating contracts, legal agreements or finding new options to legal problems (if you have them). If you work in imaginative fields that support music, art, drama/theatre, writing, dancing, singing, etc. Mars in Libra enhances your “creative bug.” You may find the last four weeks of 2013 to be quite favorable in this aspect. Where Mars in Virgo focused on the tangible, Mars in Libra provides us with the opportunity to focus on the whimsical parts of our lives. And with Mercury currently traversing through Sagittarius, a sign quite complementary to Libra, interactions and exchanges over the next three weeks will be warm and fuzzy!
Although rarely mentioned on “Sun sign” astrology sites, when planets leave Virgo and enter Libra, a cataclysmic shift occurs in the cosmos. In advanced astrology, the first six signs of the zodiac [ Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo] mark the development of the “personal” or the personality; while the final six signs of the zodiac [Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces] mark the development of the “soul” or “spirit.” If Virgo signals the end of the personal, then certainly Libra signals the beginning of the impersonal. How does this translate to Mars? Well our energy will be less focused on “me” and more aligned with “we.” Remember when I mentioned Virgo’s emphasis on “self-improvement”, “self-diets”/exercise routines, “self-help” etc.? Contrast this with Libra’s need for interpersonal relationships, love partnerships and connecting with others (the emphasis is “us” here).
Lack of action is the biggest challenge for Mars in Libra. Mars represents “action” while Libra represents “pause.” Mars presses us to move forward but Libra presses us to just wait a while. Symbolized by the Scales, Libra labors intensively to safeguard any actions taken by the native are fair and just. As a result, we may be hesitant to perform or exhibit passive-aggressiveness in our drives. Libra works extremely hard to ensure equality and harmony—although Mars doesn’t make this a priority. Initially, the planet may have a difficult time adjusting to the graceful nature of this constellation. Those who benefit greatly from this movement are those with their Sun, Ascendant and/or Mars sign in the Fire or Air family. Those of us with our Sun, Ascendant and/or Mars sign in the Earth and Water family may find it uncomfortable: it’s challenging to channel our energy consistently since lighthearted Libra supports unstructured tasks/goals.
