On Saturday August 23rd, the Sun ends its transit in its home constellation of Leo to make waves in Virgo: the last sign of the Summer season. In the natal chart, the Sun sign reveals who we are at our true core and the characteristics of each sign describe an individual’s personality stripped down. Astrologers associate Virgo with health and service, particularly: mental and physical health, diet/exercise regimes, self-improvement and community service. Those of us (myself included) with a Sun in Virgo are the “worker bees” of the zodiac: preoccupied with introverted self-progress in an effort to better serve others. As a result, over the next four weeks, these themes implant themselves in our lives —even if your natal Sun sign is NOT Virgo. This is quite different from our most recent Sun in Leo transit which prompted us to focus on extroverted creative self expression, leisure, hobbies, entertainment, the arts, romance and children.
Earthy Virgo prides herself on realism, tangibility and the material. The ego or true core of the Virgin resonates with things that can be verified and learned to be true. Virgo functions best as a minimalist, asking questions like: “what is the most competent way to do ____?” This efficiency borderlines perfectionism and gives them the negative tagline of being obsessive, compulsive and nitpicky. It’s pretty interesting because Virgo encompasses the practicality found in all Earth signs but an edge of detachment found in all Air signs. Over the next month, the Sun in Virgo encourages us to engage in projects or endeavors that guarantee success. The Virgin’s obsession with facts and figures may prove beneficial to all of us thanks to the Sun’s progression into this sign. This is a perfect time to find ways to be productive and organized. Virgo has a strong need to be needed and we adopt this attitude as the Sun travels here: we want to show others just how useful we can truly be.
In addition to being an Earth sign, Virgo resides in the Mutable modality. Mutable signs possess adaptable, transformative and malleable personalities. When the Sun travels through Mutable signs, it marks the close (transformation) of one season in preparation for a new one under a Cardinal sign. In a literal sense, and in this case, Virgo signals the end of Summer (which started under Cardinal Cancer, and expanded under Fixed Leo). Symbolically, the Sun in Virgo urge us to make transform, evolve or finalize projects/goals/exchanges that we’ve had in the works since late June. This is even more true now that Mercury, our communication planet, is also in Virgo at this time. The greatest challenge under this transit is to miss the forest for the trees; the Virgoan attention to detail is often our (referencing Sun in Virgo individuals) undoing.
This Sun in Virgo transit will greatly impact those with a natal Sun sign and/or Ascendant sign in Virgo. The next four weeks are a period to redirect your attention to self, your needs and goals. There may be opportunities reinvent yourself; either by transforming your appearance (either to your physical body or even in your way of dress) or transforming your mannerisms as you exchange with others.
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Ascendant sign in Pisces may be drawn towards focusing your attention on a “significant other.” Your true core, or personality, is greatly wrapped around an intimate relationship and the best way you can better serve or support this individual. The Sun in Earth Virgo emboldens you to take a flexible but practical approach to issues of intimacy, compromise and negotiation. Since Virgo obsesses over self-improvement, the Sun in your “other” sector asks you to adapt to their needs instead of pushing your own.
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Ascendant sign in Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio and Capricorn find gentle support with our Sun in Virgo progression. This astral change offers a strong backing for realistic activities. The quality of introversion and introspection come easily to both Earth and Water signs: so these four definitely understand and can relate to the energy introduced under Sun in Virgo. The dependency on both emotional and material comfort is also a byproduct of these astrological elements.
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Ascendant sign in Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius may feel a bit uncomfortable and may benefit the least from this Sun in Virgo transition. The warmth and extroversion found in Fire and Air signs are lost on reserved and inward Virgo. Positively, the Sun in Virgo may push these free-spirited (and sometimes careless) signs in the direction of organization and orderliness: two traits often lost amongst these elements.
