On Tuesday August 12th, Venus left emotive Cancer and entered fiery Leo. In astrology, Venus governs what we value in romantic relationships and how we express these desires to others. In the natal chart, if the natal Venus sign is different from the natal Sun sign, it can explain why certain people behave differently in relationships than the traditional descriptions of their Sun sign. Conversely, as Venus passes through constellations that are non-complementary to our natal Venus sign, it can indicate possible upheaval or tension in our romantic lives.
In Leo, Venus values the freedom of creative expression (in my personal opinion, Leos are among the MOST creative people of the zodiac); with our love planet here, it signals romantic emphasis placed on the arts and athletics in our partnerships. The Lion values strong displays of both affection and attention to and from a lover; for those of us without a natal Venus in Leo, we may temporarily take on these qualities as we interact with our current (or potential) mates. Astrologers also associate Leo with leisure and recreational pursuits, hobbies, romance and children. Thus, these themes will make a grand appearance in our lives during this Venus transit. Overall, Leo is a fun and playful lover: Venus in Leo encourages us to let our hair down and enjoy ourselves a little bit.
Leo, as a Fire sign, is bold, expressive and extremely gregarious! Of all the Fire signs, I believe Leo to be the MOST generous: the egos of these Lions are big but their hearts are much bigger. Naturally, as the “King” of the Jungle (even though Lions actually live in Savanna grasslands), Leos are among the zodiac’s most dramatic—-and unnecessarily so at times. Venus in Leo wants to be your one and only: even if Leo isn’t interested in making you their one and only. There’s a battle of showmanship with these guys: they will NOT be outdone in the love department. Attention is everything. Positively, Fire signs are immensely passionate, highly energized and free spirited beings. Because Venus is currently traveling through a Fire sign, until September 5th, cosmic energy is ushering in spunk and flavor that may have been missing in our love interactions. Unfortunately, Leo’s incessant need to be the center of attention creates a propensity for exaggeration. Creative and imaginative Leo effortlessly engages in “colorful” (read as “lies”) words and gestures in their romantic partnerships simply for the thrill. Leo has a subconscious desire for spice—but when immature and unchecked, it can turn into a soap opera.
The Lion also carries a card in the Fixed family (also including Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius). The signs of the Fixed modality are persistent, determined and willful (but depending on who you ask, the word “willful” should be interpreted as “stubborn”). For Venus in Fixed Leo, this perseverance is at its highest during the thrill of the chase, subsiding but sustaining once the partnership is in full swing. Flashy Venus in Leo is indulgent and lavish: pulling out all the tricks to impress their mate. More so than any other modality, Fixed signs want things done their way —–“compromise” isn’t frequently employed in their vocabulary. Fiery fixed Leo needs to be the one running the show or the relationship will be over before it even builds up steam. The biggest challenge for all of us is to watch for pushy, bossy behavior with our mates that are counterproductive to our overall relationship needs. Leo’s preponderance for inflexibility in their relationships can also mean we must refrain from being unyielding with our lovers.
This Venus in Leo transition will make the most waves for those of you with a natal Sun sign and/or Venus sign in Leo. Right now, the world is speaking your love language: everyone seems to “get” what you crave in. This is a very good time for you to figure out what it is you need in a partnership and whether or not you are satisfied with these goals. Take the next few weeks to reinvent yourself to make yourself more desirable to the person you have now (or seek in the future).
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Venus sign in Aquarius will also feel the heat (pun intended) of our Venus in Leo shift. The Water Bearer and the Lion are polar opposites. Over the next few weeks, Venus in Leo prompts you to figure out how companionable you are within a relationship. This is NOT a time to push your romantic agenda upon a current (or potential) mate. Instead, this is a time to learn/refine your ability to compromise, negotiate and sacrifice. What needs does your partner have and how well are you fulfilling them? You may need to seek creative, but consistent methods to smooth over wrinkles and show that you are ready or able to support this person. When I refer to a “significant other” this should be interpreted as either a romantic partner or a very close business associate.
Those with a natal Sun sign/and or Venus sign in Virgo may feel the need to retreat into the shadows: moving behind the scenes to work on spiritual matters before the planet passes through your own sign. This is a time to process karmic energy that you’ve been harboring regarding your love life and truly introspect on an ethereal level. I’d call this “clearing out” any romantic clutter that hindered you from making changes in the love department.
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Venus sign in Aries, Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius may find this Venus in Leo transition to be quite favorable. The extroverted and playful mannerisms of Leo blends perfectly with your natural inclination towards fun and spiritedness. There is a mutual respect and similarity between Fire and Air folk.
Those with a natal Sun sign and/or Venus sign in Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces benefit the least from this Venus in Leo change. The subtle, introverted and reserved disposition of the Earth and Water group are starkly different than the bold nature of Leo. Positively, this cosmic transition stimulates this group to move outside of their romantic comfort zone for the sake of saving an existing or starting a new partnership.
