**I’ve decided to combine two signs in one article due to the back-and-forth that Mercury will do over the coming months (I mean, c’mon, I’m a Sun in Virgo: downsizing is something I do rather efficiently ). Plus, it’ll be easier for you guys to refer back to this page once the Mercurian swapping has peaked. This article is extremely long, so it’s best to just search for the dates at the beginning of each section to find out what you can expect during those periods.
September 2nd- September 27th : Mercury in Libra
On Tuesday September 2nd, Mercury left its placement of exaltation in Virgo and cartwheeled into objective Libra. In astrology, Mercury manages all things related to communication; in the natal chart, however, Mercury signs reveal how we prefer to interact with others, how we prefer to gather information and how we prefer to interpret the information gathered. As Mercury passes through signs that are not our own, it could signal possible misunderstandings and mental frustration or a period where the gift of gab flourishes. All this depends on whether or not the Mercury transit is in a noncomplementary or complementary sign, respectively. Astrologers associate Libra with fairness and justice (making “The Scales of Justice” or “Lady Justice” the perfect representation of the sign). Libra is also linked to legal issues/agreements/contracts as well as partnerships. When these topics are reviewed from a bird’s-eye, it’s easy to see that Libra generally pursues equality and balance in intimate partnerships: whether the relationship is one of business or romance. Additionally, Libra also represents all things sophisticated, beautiful and artsy. Mercury in Libra is perfect for writers, artists, and other individuals who work in creative industries!
Astrologers label Mercury as rational, objective, quick-witted, open and inquisitive. Thus, it feels quite comfy relaxing in Libra. As an Air sign, Libra is ruled by mental energy: rationalization comes effortlessly here. During this Mercury in Libra transit, we are guided towards the approach of diplomacy and compromise in our exchanges/conversations with others. The Libran predisposition towards the unending quest for harmony can sometimes mean that Libra prefers to acknowledge the “pros” and wish away the “cons.” This is the “rose colored glasses” effect: the tendency to romanticize things that shouldn’t be. As a result, Mercury in Libra can be easily duped and fooled. The need to keep the peace can also mean Mercury in Libra has difficulty asserting oneself to stave off conflict and confusion. The biggest challenge for all of us during this Mercurian transit is to refrain from “fence sitting” on issues during a debate simply because we want to be fair. This quality about Libra can also mean being intentionally dishonest to spare hurt feelings or dramatic explosions on the part of another. Positively, Mercury is charming, socially graceful and kind when passing through Libra; these traits will manifest in all our lives over the next few weeks. This is a wonderful time to schedule interviews, conferences and presentations: balanced Mercury in Libra wants to see everyone win so it’s easier to seek a positive outcome for every person involved.
This Mercury in Libra transition is extremely beneficial to those with a natal Sun sign and/or Mercury sign in Libra. This is a period where everyone else seems to be “speaking your language” of diplomacy and cooperativeness. The mind is innovative and you are ready to push forward with new ideas and solutions to old problems.
This Mercury in Libra transition draws those with a natal Sun sign and/or Mercury sign in Aries to pay more attention to intimate relationships: whether it is of a business or romantic nature. With the communication planet traveling through the sector of your natal chart connected to your “other”, you are encouraged to refine those negotiation skills between yourself and someone you are close to. Mercury in Libra prompts you to hold back your fiery temper in order to elicit a better outcome for both parties.
Saturday September 27th- Saturday October 4th : Mercury in Scorpio
Mercury leaves cooperative Libra and eases into secretive Scorpio. The openness of Libra is exchanged for something much more reserved and conservative in Scorpio. Astrologers associate the Scorpion with all things taboo, hidden and mysterious. Within this grouping, one can find particular interest in death, the occult/spiritual/paranormal/mystical, and anything else that captures the label of “otherworldly.” With our mental astral body cruising through this sign, needless to say, these topics become intellectually stimulating to all of us. This can also include sex, in all of its transcendental and primitive qualities. When in Scorpio, Mercury is curious and piercing—this is most calculated mind of all Mercury Water signs. Along with Virgo and Capricorn, Scorpio ranks as a top sign for self-censorship and with Mercury here, we are all emboldened to adopt this characteristic. The tendency to withhold information from another in order to gauge what they already know is quite typical of Scorpio. Positively, conversations with the Scorpion take on a mystical or ethereal quality; Water Mercury signs effortlessly tap into their intuition and possess an amazing ability to heal through words. While Mercury travels through Scorpio, our minds are transformative and our communication style is fluid. Essentially, during this period, the biggest challenge is to hone in the skill of knowing when to hold and when to fold when it comes to sharing knowledge that we’ve encountered.
In addition to the Water family, Scorpio is also a Fixed sign. Resultingly, Mercury in Scorpio urges us to be intellectually persistent and relentless. More than any other modality, Fixed signs are able to stick to a task/idea until it is finished. The lesson here is to watch for stubbornness or tunnel vision when presented with information that conflicts with knowledge previously held. Fixed signs possess deep reserves of concentration and willpower making this an excellent time to engage in heavy duty research that requires you to be both detail-oriented and thorough.
This Mercury in Scorpio transition is most beneficial for those with a natal Sun sign and/or Mercury sign in Scorpio. It seems easier to communicate your personal needs/agenda. This is a period of intense self-awareness and self-expression. I’d strongly recommend pursuing intellectual/mental goals you’ve been holding onto recently: others are much more receptive and you have the opportunity to manifest these ideas into something much bigger.
This Mercury in Scorpio transition leads those with a natal Sun sign and/or Mercury sign in Taurus to redirect their mental energy to a significant other (business, romantic or even both). This is definitely a period to have “that talk” and attempt to work out differences that strain the relationship. It’s also quite possible that you’ll enter into a new business or romantic relationship that stimulates you intellectually and draws out your need to compromise and cooperate. This isn’t really a time for “self” and self-assertion: this is a time to negotiate and work with others instead of alone.
Saturday October 4th- Friday October 10th : Mercury in Scorpio Rx
Mercury dives into a retrograde period and causes a whole heap of problems. In astronomy, whenever a planet goes “retrograde” it appears to be moving backwards in the sky. Of course, no planet can actually reverse orbit mid-stream but it looks that way from our vantage point on Earth. In astrology, retrograde periods signal a time to “go back over” the area that the planet governs. Since Mercury deals with information gathering, information processing and information communication, this is a period to be double check everything! Mixed signals, crossed wires and misunderstandings increase during this period. Astrologers notate scheduling delays, transportation problems, and frazzled electronic exchanges. Generally speaking, Water Mercury signs are simultaneously considered “mute signs.” This is due to their preponderance towards deep introspection: this trio is immensely intuitive and are predominately emotional communicators. With Mercury retrograding in a “mute sign” what may be said during this period may not be what is actually felt and vice versa. This is NOT a time for interviews, presentations, conferences or anything similar —unless they are unavoidable. Astrologers also ward against making large purchases; particularly as it relates modes of transportation (i.e. cars, bikes, motorized scooters, etc.) and electronics (i.e. phones, laptops, tablets, etc.). Instead, this serves as a reflective period to review information that’s come your way instead of responding emotionally immediately.
Friday October 10th- Saturday October 25th : Mercury in Libra Rx
Here’s where things get tricky! Mercury is actually still in a retrograde phase during this time but has managed to slip backwards into the constellation of Libra. All of the things I mentioned in the previous section apply here with a little twist. Miscommunications are definitely still likely to occur during this time but since Libra is an Air sign (and not a Water/ mute sign like Scorpio), the communication errors manifest differently. During this period, it’s quite easy to over-idealize things in our interactions with others; Mercury in Libra tends to romanticize in conversation which can point to being extremely detached and unrealistic. It’s much easier for us to don rose-colored glasses as we interpret words and actions from others during this time. This is still not a time to schedule important meetings/conferences, presentations, or anything similar.
